Rhinoceros - one of the Big Five as a wooden work of art
The black rhinoceros is one of the 'Big Five' wild animals, along with the African elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard. Just like its role model in the wild, this unique specimen made of precious Soar wood wears its pointed and powerful horn on its forehead. It radiates strength. The unique grain makes the animal figure come alive, the detailed wood carving especially in the head area gives the sculpture authenticity. Like a living conspecific, this stately rhino shows signs of life. Due to a natural break in the wood, the right ear appears as if the rhino has been in a fight. It is slightly shorter. A unique piece from rhino tip to toe.
In its own home, the rhinoceros, which is about 120 cm long and 60 cm high, is an attraction and eye-catcher. Its weight is also far below that of its living shaper and still stands for the imposing nature of this special garden decoration. The work of art weighs 110 kg. So it will not be thrown off course that easily.
Innovative artist collective in Bali
The rhinoceros is a unique piece, formed by a Balinese artist collective in finest detail work. We came across the small manufactory during our last trip to Indonesia. Their woodcarvings are characterized by the realistic representation of the figures. The attention to detail, classical techniques combined with innovative approaches ensure the high standards the artists have.
The wondrous rain tree - Suar wood and its qualities
The rhinoceros owes its authenticity not only to the execution but also to the special material from which it is carved. Suar - the wood of the wondrous rainbow tree - captivates with its contrasting grain between chocolate and golden brown. The relatively soft and rather light material is used for the construction of musical instruments.
The magical: In the film The Land of the Rainbow Tree with Elizabeth Taylor, tropical wood is the protagonist. It is said that the finder of the tree realizes the meaning of life. This acacia species does not belong to the endangered and protected woods.
Care tip: Suar wood tends to crack in variable humidity. Optimally this would be 50-60%. Underfloor heating and placing next to a radiator can increase cracking.
